Two teens charged with mass shooting in Dadeville

Two teens were charged Wednesday with reckless murder in the mass shooting at a sweet 16th birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama. The shooting, which occurred Saturday night, left four dead and 32 others injured.

The teens, 17-year-old Ty Reik McCullough and 16-year-old Travis McCullough will be tried as adults, according to fifth circuit district attorney Mike Segrest.

UM Swim’s Will Mahone named UM first All-American

University of Montevallo’s Will Mahone continued etching his name into the history books at the NCAA Division II National Championships, posting an eighth-place national finish in the 200-yard backstroke.

Mahone set a school record in the preliminaries to secure a spot in the championship race with a time of 1:45.40. He then returned to the pool in the evening session and swam a time of 1:46.2.

Montevallo, Al- More housing is coming for students at Montevallo.

The University recently purchased an apartment complex just off campus for $1 million, and plans to purchase more soon.

Every year downtown Montevallo becomes a scene out of a Christmas movie around this time, and the City of Montevallo Chamber of Commerce made no exception this year at the annual Christmas Parade and tree lighting ceremony. Residents lined Main Street on Thursday, Dec.1 at 6 pm. to witness the event. The tree lighting ceremony was conducted by Stanley and Joe Dawson on the Post office lawn before the parade.

It was a day of fun and festivities for Montevallo. The city hosted its yearly Artwalk festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families from the community came out to support local artists who set up tents along main street to display and sell their work.

The university celebrated its 126th annual Founder’s Day last Tuesday at 11 a.m. This year’s senior class got to don their graduation robes for the first time. Following the same path as their predecessors, the seniors marched across Main Quad to Palmer Hall for the convocation ceremony.

This year’s theme was A Montevallo Moment. In his opening speech, President John Stewart said the theme represents how the Montevallo family is held together by their experiences and moments at UM.

Gas prices have fluctuated more since the turn of the millennium than they ever did in the 20th Century. In January 2008, they rose to their highest point in U.S. history at the end of a decade-long energy crisis, then fell with the economic recession and remained inconsistent through the 2010s.

In Spring 2020, gas prices plummeted due to widespread locks downs caused by the pandemic. Now two years later the national average price of gas is $4.32 per gallon, the highest it’s been since 2008.
